I Do AI
I have been doing AI for a few years because it offers me a chance of increasing genetic diversity in my area and brings in what I need to my herd without the cost of hiring a transporter to move a live animal across several states.
Though I have done this as well.
The procedure cuts down on the number of males I need to keep around for breeding as well and reduces damage to fencing and feed cost.
I take my animals in have them collected and sell some of the semen and keep the rest for myself later down the line when I want to breed back to improve on a specific aspect.
its important to note the average success rate with AI in cattle is 75% or higher however with goats it tends to be 50% .
I use pg600 or lute depending on the requirements and Cidrs to heat sync even when not doing AI in order to reduce rut stress on bucks and does so they do not lose a lot of weight and i can better determine when i should expect kids.
I do not sonogram or palpate so i highly recommend blood tests
the general procedure
-
I drive out and insert a Cidr
-
10 days later i return to remove Cidr and give a shot of lute , pg600 or estrumate.
-
that day I charge a transport tank and retrieve the semen straws from your holding facility unless you have it in a tank on the property.
-
48 hours after shot I check readiness and evaluate when to inseminate. doe is not to be given food or water 24 hours prior to insemination.
-
when doe is fully ready to breed presenting with clear opening and abundant healthy mucus i insert the insemination gun and inseminate.
-
client is expected to walk each doe for 15 minutes not allowing for urination or attempts to push out semen
-
after Ai i leave you with the straw for correct data entry to the registry
-
blood draws possible for an additional fee for pregnancy checks at 33 days
for the best sucess rate make sure females have adequate access to minerals and have been properly wormed and vaccinated prior to heat sync .
I highly recommend Biozyme Heat and concept aid for both cattle and goats and Chubby
while not required for goats we recommend a goat stanchion for ai.
